CJ’s Tree Services offers Arbor Care ranging from natural pruning of specimen shrubs to structural pruning of ornamental small trees, to pruning and removal of some of Bee Ridge’s largest trees. We specialize in all aspects of plant health care with an emphasis on organic solutions to plant health problems. We can spot diseases, pest ridden and dying trees, and help eliminate the problem before it gets out of hand, costing you more money in the long run.

In the Bee Ridge area, there are many types of tree diseases that can affect the health of your trees.

  • Fusiform Rust is widespread throughout the Sarasota area. It affects mostly pine trees. Caused by the fungus Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme (Cqf), the disease leads to rust galls or cankers on the main stem and branches of trees. Rust galls affect the wood quality and yield by causing deformed and broken stems in young trees.
  • Brown Spot Needle Blight is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella dearnessii (syn. Scirrhia acicola). If left untreated, it can eventually kill young trees that have been infected. You can reduce the spread by regularly pruning the trees to allow good air circulation that will dry the trees quickly.
  • Laurel Wilt is a deadly disease of the Cherry Laurel and other native plants in the laurel family. The disease is caused by the fungus, Raffaelea lauricola, which is introduced into host trees by a non-native insect, the redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus. The fungus quickly plugs the water-conducting cells of an affected tree and causes it to wilt. These beetles can be difficult to identify so an arbor care specialist should be consulted for positive identification.
  • Ganoderma Karst is a large and diverse genus of wood decay fungi that can rot the roots and/or lower trunk of many tree species. There are several laccate (varnished or polished) Ganoderma species that are found in the Bee Ridge area. These species can be recognized by their shiny, reddish-brown, and shelf-like fruiting bodies. These fruiting bodies have a pale pore surface on the bottom that darkens with age or handling and can be stipitate (stem present) or sessile (stem absent). When Ganoderma fruiting bodies are observed, it is an indication that wood decay is active, whether on fallen logs, buried roots, or the trunks of living or dead trees.
